Understanding the EUR/USD rate

The EUR/USD pair expresses how many units of US dollar correspond to one unit of Euro. The order of the codes matters: reverse them and the quoted number changes.

ExchangeRate-API supplies the reference. If neither currency is the dollar, the site derives the cross-rate from USD-based observations recorded on the same date.

What the change means

The change compares the latest value with the immediately preceding record. An increase means the base currency buys more units of the quote currency; a decrease means it buys fewer. This does not predict the next move. To understand the market, consider the observed range, each point’s date and possible influences from economic news, monetary-policy decisions and demand for both currencies.

How to read the historical chart

The chart plots daily observations fetched from ExchangeRate-API’s historical endpoint. The 15-, 30- and 60-day buttons set the visible window and update the initial rate, latest rate, change and range. Missing observations are not invented for weekends or other dates. A daily series helps explain the path of the reference rate, but it does not represent every transaction executed in the market.

Reference rate versus final price

A bank, exchange bureau or transfer service may offer a price different from the informational reference. Buy–sell spreads, fees, taxes and settlement timing affect the outcome.
